2012

In keeping with my annual tradition (2011, 2010, 2009, 2008), this Samhain Eve I’m reflecting on everything that’s happened this year.

In 2012, I AAAed 7 more catas. We watched Fullmetal Alchemist, Phineas and Ferb, Midsomer Murders, and Murdoch Mysteries. The most beautiful video game I played was Journey. My favorite books of 2012 were Finding Your North Star, Peace Is Every Step, and The Anatomy of Peace. Oh, and the Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson.

In January, we went on a family trip to Big Bend National Park and I got stabbed in the leg by a shin-dagger, which hampered my DDR practice for several weeks. I taught The Way of the Peaceful Entrepreneur with Kelly, and Nathalie came to visit us for a few days.

In February, we brought on Ellie as our assistant, and Kelly and I finished teaching The Way.

In March, we attended SXSW and saw many of our friends. Ellie, Johnny, and Rhiannon stayed with us. We randomly bumped into Adam Baker at a restaurant and he interviewed me for I’m Fine, Thanks.

In April, we prepared for the third annual World-Changing Writing Workshop.

In May, we taught the third annual World-Changing Writing Workshop. We met Susan Piver when she came to Austin, we attended her workshop on the Enneagram, and got hooked on it.

In June, we visited with Kelly Kingman in her hometown of Beacon, NY. We presented “How Your Blog Can Change the World” at Blogworld, and explored New York City with Kelly and Ellie. While in the area, we visited my best friend Kelan and his lovely family in Philadelphia. Kyeli took a spill and injured her ankle. We began working with Mark Silver in the Organic Business Development Program, which has been ridiculously helpful in continuing to grow and evolve our business.

In July, we brought on Lianne as our assistant. Kyeli almost got a dog, and then got a dog very briefly, but it didn’t work out. We presented “Why Your Dreams Aren’t Enough to Change the World (And What You’re Missing)” at the World Domination Summit. While in Portland, we visited with many of our friends (both local and visiting for WDS). We scouted out neighborhoods, planning to move to Portland in March, but we had no idea what was just around the corner. We saw the world premiere of I’m Fine, Thanks. It changed our lives and was one of the 3 keys to our big decision: to sell all our stuff, quit my day job, live in an RV, and tour the country.

In August, we started exploring the ramifications of that big decision. We started using the term “edgewalker” to refer to our people – those who are out there on the edge of what’s normal, what’s acceptable, and what’s possible. I taught Pathfinding Class for the first time, and we brought on Heidi as our assistant.

In September, we prepared for RV life, including buying a truck powerful enough to safely pull our new home. I worked my last month at my day job, and dyed my hair purple after my last day. I acquired an iPhone. Kyeli acquired gout. Who got the better end of that deal?

In October, Kyeli began IGNITE. We attended (and were asked to speak at) Nathan and Julie’s wedding. We bought an RV, sold or otherwise got rid of 90% of our earthly possessions, moved out of our house, and moved into our new home-on-wheels! We started getting the hang of our new life-on-wheels, and we saw Alanis Morissette in concert.

I began 2012 secure, confident, comfortable, and stable. This year, I received a wondrous gift: all of that was taken away from me. At any point I could have turned back. I could have plugged my ears to drown out the calling of my heart, and gone back to a life of security, comfort, confidence, and stability.

Instead, I followed my heart and took the leap.

2013 will bring many new surprises, but we’ll face them – together – with open arms and open hearts.

Feel clear and confident about your direction in life!
